Oms

It is a small village located in the southern part from Aspres on the edge of the Vallespir area. 279 inhabitants live there.
Oms’ name comes from Ulmus, the elm tree. This tree is very present in the region.
An old fortified village, it nestles in the middle of the hills facing the nearby Canigou mountain. The heart of the old village is the main square, full of charm, located at the foot of the Romanesque St. John’s church. With its 10th century tower belfry, it contains a 13th century sarcophagus. It was classified as a historical monument on 30 January 1964. In Oms, the front gate of the former lord’s castle remains, on the right a staircase of 23 steps leads to the belfry in which there was a 2m by 2m cell. The small bell dates from 1403 and the large one from the 19th century. Its eastern side is delimited by the church of Saint Jean and the fortified gate adjoining it, a remnant of the ramparts and the seigneurial castle. It is also the starting point for hikes.
